Energy is measured by the work that the body can do. Mechanical energy is the energy that is possessed by an object due to its motion or due to its position. Gravitational potential energy has the same units as kinetic energy:&nbsp;<strong>kg m<\/strong><strong><sup>2<\/sup><\/strong><strong>&nbsp;\/ s<\/strong><strong><sup>2.<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">There are two main types of potential energy and they are:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Gravitational Potential Energy<\/li><li>Elastic Potential Energy<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Example: The chemical potential energy of a firecracker is released when the fuse of the firecracker is lit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stones sitting on an edge of a cliff possess potential energy. If the stones fall the potential energy will be converted to kinetic energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Expression for potential energy of a body at height \u2018h<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Example: A body of mass m kg. The amount of work done in doing so is mgh joules(J) which is stored in the body as potential energy. If a constant force F Newton is applied against the motion of the body to bring it to rest, the work done is equal to its kinetic energy. This is calculated by the formula KE =1\/2mv<sup>2<\/sup> joules<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color:#3f19a7\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Work<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"220\" height=\"298\" src=\"https:\/\/themindpalace.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/work.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1495\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Performing an activity is commonly considered as work, Work is said to be done only if the force displaces the body in its own direction of action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Example :<\/strong> A man lifting a heavy stone<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-purple-color\">Factors affecting the work<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is very clear that the magnitude of displacement is increasing over the increase in the magnitude of force applied.
