When these compound molecules are subdivided, elements are obtained. The smallest unit of the element is called an atom. Depending on the atoms present in the substances, they are classified as elements, compounds, and mixtures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-purple-color\">Elements<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elements are made up of very small particles. These are formed by particles with the same properties. Elements cannot be subdivided chemically and cannot be synthesized by other elements.<span style=\"color:#207a15\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> Example Oxygen &#8211; O Hydrogen \u2013 H<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some elements are naturally available whereas some other elements are artificially prepared. Elements are classified as metals and non metals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color:#218530\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Example : Natural element &#8211; Gold Artificial element &#8211; Plutonium.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-purple-color\">Compounds<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When two are more elements combine chemically in a specific ratio and form a substance of new property it is called a compound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color:#26711d\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u00a0Example : Water &#8211; H<sub>2<\/sub>O.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Water is a compound formed by the chemical combination of Hydrogen and Oxygen in the ratio 2 :1 Molecular formula is used to represent a compound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Example : Sugar is made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. But sugar does not possess any of their properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-purple-color\">Mixtures<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If two or more substances (elements or compounds) are mixed together in any ratio, such that they do not undergo any chemical change, but retain their individual properties, then the resulting substance is called a mixture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<span style=\"color:#257a36\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Example : Soil is a mixture of sand, clay, many types of salts and residues of plants and animals.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"color:#bc0b9f\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Differences between compounds and mixture Compounds Mixtures<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong><span style=\"color:#441ea3\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Compounds<\/span><\/strong><\/td><td><span style=\"color:#3b25b7\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Mixtures<\/strong><\/span><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>1. When two or more elements combine chemically compounds are formed<\/td><td>When two or more substances mix physically, mixtures are formed.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>2. The constituents of compounds are combined in definite ratio or proportion<\/td><td>The constituents of a mixture may be mixed in any proportion<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>3. The constituent substances of a compound do not retain their original properties after combination<\/td><td>The constituent substances of a mixture retain their individual properties.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>4.
