ROOTS – SUPPORT OF THE PLANT
Summary of roots supports of the plant
Solved exercise of Roots supports of the plant
Summary
Roots are the organs of the plants that are modified to provide anchorage for the plant and take in water and nutrients into the plant body, which allows plants to grow taller and faster.Roots bind the soil particles together like a web. This supports the plant to stand straight on the ground. The root system of a plant constantly provides the stems and leaves with water and dissolved minerals.
The different types of roots
1. Taproot:with a main taproot that is larger and grows faster than the branch root.
2.Fibrous root:with all roots about the same size;
3.Adventitious, roots :that form on any plant part other than the roots.
Where do the roots of a plant grow?
Root growth is one of the functions of the apical meristem located near the tip of the root.Tree roots usually grow to three times the diameter of the branch spread, only half of which lie underneath the trunk and canopy. The roots from one side of a tree usually supply nutrients to the foliage on the same side.
What is the colour of the root?
young roots are almost white older ones from a tree are from light brown to black! The colour of roots depends on the fact that they are not exposed to light and therefore lacking chlorophyll but it depends from dimensions, kind of plant end the ground in which they grow.
The Root is the supporter of the Plant
Root web conserves soil particles and water.Roots fix the plants firmly to the soil.Roots absorb water and nutrients from the soil and supply them to the other parts of the plants.
Plants need water to grow
Plants need water for photosynthesis. Absorbed by the roots, water travels through a plant’s stems to the chloroplasts in the leaves. Water also helps move nutrients from the soil into the plant. Too little water can cause a plant to wilt or droop. The roots absorb water and nutrients essential for the plants from the soil .Water and nutrients reach the stem and leaves through the roots.
Some of the vegetables that grow under roots
Root vegetables grow underground, they absorb a great amount of nutrients from the soil.
Example:Carrots, yuca, kohlrabi, onions, garlic, celery root (or celeriac), horseradish, daikon, turmeric, jicama, Jerusalem artichokes, radishes, and ginger .
